SIMA intends to revise the Shipping (STCW Convention) Regulations 2011 and ensure it fully domesticates the STCW Convention and is adapted to Solomon Islands circumstances while creating an enabling environment for seafarers and manning of ships in the future. The STCW Convention is the international convention providing for the training and assessment of seafarers allowing seafarers trained under STCW standards holding internationally recognised certificates of competency and the ability to work on any ship in the world.
It is critical to raise the profile of maritime training in Solomon Islands to offer new opportunities of sustainable employment to our youth and provide a skilled maritime workforce to our growing shipping industry. This legal development aligns with the Maritime Labour Mobility & Shipping Registry National Roadmap launched by the Solomon Islands Government in August 2024.
