Job Title Technical Officer, Sustainable Shipping Grade F – Technical Officer
Employment Full-time Contract 3 years
Job purpose The Technical Officer, Sustainable Shipping is responsible for supporting the implementation of plans and project related to sustainable shipping operations. He/she participate in ship safety inspections and visits to verify implementation of air and marine pollution prevention measures and management plans.

Introduction

The Solomon Islands Maritime Authority (SIMA) has been established by act of parliament and is the financially self-sufficient and independent maritime administration to facilitate implementation of international and regional maritime agreements and applicable maritime laws.

SIMA administers the Solomon Islands maritime sector, inspecting vessels, coordinating maritime search and rescue, preventing and coordinating response to pollutions from ships, and providing safety of navigation services. Four overarching goals are adopted in its Corporate Plan 2020-2023:

  • Improved Maritime Safety & Pollution Prevention,
  • Improved Safety of Navigation, Environment Protection & Response,
  • Effective International & Regional Maritime Cooperation, and
  • Good Governance & Quality Services.

Key responsibilities

Teamwork – Work collaboratively as a team by communicating effectively, providing technical support and MRCC duties, and maintaining punctuality and reliable 24/7 service delivery.

Sustainable Shipping Operations – Support sustainable shipping by collecting and analysing data, assisting policy and project implementation, conducting vessel inspections and energy audits, and contributing to maritime training and capacity-building initiatives.

Pollution Preparedness and Response – Support marine pollution prevention and emergency response, NATPLAN implementation and collaboration with national and international partners.

Quality Management System – Ensure compliance with SIMA’s quality, safety, and record-keeping requirements through continuous improvement and proper documentation.

Qualifications and Experience

EDUCATION & QUALIFICATION
Essential Desirable
Marine studies or similar, or equivalent Seafarer’s Certificate of Competency. Diploma in a field of Maritime Affairs or Marine Science or Master/Engineer Class 3 Certificate of Competency with specialisation in sustainable shipping.
EXPERIENCE
Essential Desirable
1-5 years of demonstrated experience in demonstrated experience in Flag State implementation related to vessel safety and pollution prevention. Demonstrated experience in sustainable and safe operations of vessels, vessel pollution prevention and response.

Essential skills

Ability to work collaboratively within a team.

Ability to research and collect information and data from various sources and maintain an information management system.

Ability to participate in inspection, audit and visit on board vessels.

Ability to deal with ambiguity, complexity and conflicting priorities.

Selection Criteria

Demonstrated ability to research and collect information on the safe and sustainable operations of vessels.

Ability to support search and rescue or pollution response by implementing equipment and tools, communicating and reporting to coordinators.

Ability to implement professional judgement and confidently advice and propose solutions in case of search and rescue or pollution response.

Previous experience as field team member for search and rescue or pollution response.

Salary and Recruitment

Remuneration – the Technical Finance Officer is at Grade F – Technical Officer of SIMA’s organisational structure and will start with a net annual salary of SBD 86,017 after deduction of the 5% employee NPF contribution and income taxes.
